Move Over Martini.

Colorado Mountain Resort & Spa

It’s hot toddy season.

With views of snowy trails, falling flakes, and white-dusted mountain tops, the crew at Heck’s Tavern is shaking a little less ice, lighting a few more fires, and filling a lot more mugs. In addition to it being skiing, snowshoeing, and ice skating season, it’s our favorite time of the year – hot toddy season.

While many use the term hot toddy to refer to any warm cocktail, a traditional hot toddy is a concoction of hot water, honey, lemon, cloves, and cinnamon with a splash of whiskey, brandy or rum. Its origin disputed – some say India while the Brits protest – the hot toddy can be traced back to the 18th century pubs of northern England and Scotland where patrons combated the cold, damp winters by sipping the warm, spiked and spicy beverage.

Unlike mulled wine and ciders, an authentic hot toddy is less sweet and more hydrating, which made it a favorite remedy for the common cold when it made its way across the pond in the mid 1800s. But you don’t need to wait for a sniffle to savor a soothing, steaming cocktail. The dropping temperatures are reason enough!

Although there’s nothing like curling up in front of a crackling fire at Heck’s Tavern with a hot toddy, Irish coffee, or hot buttered rum, these warm, winter drinks are also the perfect way to kick start a cozy sunset sleigh ride through our 6,500acre winter wonderland. While the glistening scenery will warm your heart, the mixologists at Heck’s have a selection of piping hot beverages to warm your fingers and toes. So grab your mittens, grab a mug, and tingle all the way.
