Colorado Mountain Stargazing Astronomy

A dark summer night is the perfect time to sit back, look up, and enjoy silent, star-studded skies. While being tucked away in the Colorado Rocky Mountains, the Ranch has very little light pollution creating the ideal setting for stargazing and experiencing the most magical meteor showers and comet sightings.

COMET NEOWISE
July 10 – Mid August
The brightest comet to be visible from the Northern Hemisphere in a quarter-century! 3 miles across, the comet’s nucleus is covered with sooty material dating back to the origin of our solar system 4.6 billion years ago. The comet will be visible with the naked eye in dark skies until mid-August when it heads back toward the outer solar system and won’t return for about 7,000 years.

ANNUAL PERSEID METEOR SHOWER
July 17 – August 24
Perseids tend to be bright and should be able to overcome the moonlight. On peak mornings, August 11-13, you’ll be able to see up to 50 meteors per hour.

FULL MOON
August 3
Native Americans referred to this month’s full moon as the Green Corn Moon because the corn was fully grown, but not yet ready to harvest.

CONSTELLATIONS
July – August
Constellations visible include favorites such as The Big Dipper, The Northern Cross, and Cassiopeia, as well as the Summer Triangle, Scorpius, and The Teapot.
