Colorado Mountain Stargazing Astronomy

A dark, quiet night is the perfect time to sit back, look up, and enjoy the mesmerizing star-studded skies. While being tucked away in the Colorado Rocky Mountains, the Ranch has very little light pollution creating the ideal setting for stargazing and experiencing the most magical meteor showers and comet sightings.

LYRID METEOR SHOWER
April 16 – 25
Peaking on the night of April 22-23 after midnight, you could see shooting stars stream across the night sky up to every four minutes in clear conditions. Although the light will be competing with an almost full, extra-bright moon, the meteors should still be visible without any special equipment.

SUPERMOON
April 27
The first of three this year, a ‘supermoon’ appears bigger and brighter because it occurs when a full moon is closest to Earth. Names for April’s full moon include the Pink Moon, Growing Moon, Egg Moon, and Sprouting Grass Moon – names associated with its appearance in the springtime.

AQUARIDS METEOR SHOWER
May 6
Named after the constellation Aquarius, these meteors are created by dust from Halley’s Comet. Shooting stars appear annually from April 19 to May 28 but are most impressive after midnight on the night of May 6-7.

TOTAL LUNAR ECLIPSE & SUPERMOON
May 26
For the second month in a row, our skies experience a large, bright ‘supermoon’, and this time it will coincide with a total lunar eclipse, as the moon passes completely through Earth’s shadow. You’ll see darkening across its surface, and then the moon turning a shade of red. May’s full moon is also named the Flower Moon, Milk Moon, and Corn Planting Moon.

ANNULAR SOLAR ECLIPSE
June 10
While not a total eclipse, the annular eclipse will still be a spectacular showing of when the moon blocks out the central portion of the sun. The sky will darken and a ring of light will show around the outside of the moon.
